Hostgator Web Hosting Review

Hostgator is a full service shared hosting company that has been in business since 2002. They currently provide web hosting services to over 400,000 websites on shared and reseller hosting plans operating from four large data centers in the Dallas, TX area.

While offering many similarities to the hundreds of shared hosting plans available on the web, Hostgator distinguishes it self from the pack with shared plans that manage to go a bit beyond the norm and a well received reseller plan that allows anyone to easily operate their own web hosting service.

Shared hosting plans start at $6.95 per month for a basic plan (cutely named “Hatchling”), move on to $9.95/mo for the “Baby” plan, and $14.95/mo for the “Swamp” plan. The basic plan must be paid annually, while all others can be paid on a monthly basis.

Not sure where (or why) the silly names for the various packages, but beyond that there is a lot of bang for the buck to be found in the $9.95 and $14.95 plans. Unlike most shared plans that limit the number of domains hosted, Hostgator allows unlimited domains and subdomains for the two latter packages. This alone is well worth the price of admission for webmasters that like to build lots of sites. The wide range of control panel features includes both Fantastico and Soholaunch, another couple of great features not easily found on many of the competing packages. Unlimited MySQL Databases, support for Ruby on Rails and Python, and a web site builder are also among the standard features.

The Hostgator reseller plan is quite popular and allows webmasters the ability to host unlimited sites. The plans come complete with a billing manager, hosting templates, and an eNom domain reseller account. The end result is a turnkey operation that will allow customers purchasing from resellers to administer their websites through their own cPanel. Customers will only know they are purchasing from a reseller if they are told. Plans range from $24.95/mo to $99.95/mo with the only difference being the amount of storage and bandwidth allowed.

Hostgator has demonstrated that they are very much aware of the features webmasters need and prefer, and rather than nickle and dime for the extra’s, make every effort to include as many options as possible in their base packages..
